After 10 city trips in Germany at Christmas, from Dresden to Oberhausen, we're happy to present our top 5.
Please note; the markets are almost always closed during Christmas itself. The dates on this site can be changed at all times by the official organisations.
1. Cologne – Christmas under the Cathedral
The Cologne Christmas market 2025 is perhaps the most famous of them all. With the imposing cathedral as a fairytale backdrop, it feels like you've stepped into a Christmas card. More than a hundred stalls, lights twinkling in the winter air, and a gigantic Christmas tree make this market a highlight among German Christmas markets.
Cologne Christmas market dates: 17 November - 23 December
🚂 TIC Tip: The central station of Cologne is very conveniently located in the middle of the city center, underneath the gigantic Kölner Dom. One of the biggest Christmas markets is also next to the Dom, making the train a very smooth travel option!
2. Dresden – the oldest and most atmospheric
Dresden's Striezelmarkt, which dates back to 1434, is often cited as one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany. Here you can sample the famous Dresden Handbrot and admire handcrafted wooden Christmas decorations from the Erz Mountains. A visit to the Dresden Christmas Market in 2025 is a journey through centuries-old tradition.
Dresden Christmas market dates: 26 November - 24 December
✨ TIC Tip: Go to the Palace of Culture (Kulturpalast) for a great view from the lobby onto the twinkling Christmas lights of the famous Striezelmarkt.
3. Bremen – cozy on the Weser
The Bremen Christmas market is known for its warm, intimate atmosphere. Along the Weser River and in the historic city center, you'll discover a charming blend of maritime traditions and winter coziness. Perfect for those looking for a smaller, yet enchanting market.
Bremen Christmas market dates: 24 November - 23 December
🏴☠️ TIC Tip: It’s easy to linger at the main market near the Roland statue in the old city, but don’t miss the Schlachte-Zauber! This medieval themed Christmas market runs along the Weser promenade underneath beautiful lit up trees.
4. Hamburg – Christmas in metropolitan style
Hamburg's Christmas markets in 2025 combine cosmopolitan allure with German coziness. The market around the Rathaus (City Hall), in particular, is a feast of lights, handmade gifts, and winter treats. Add impressive light displays, and you have a metropolitan Christmas experience that is both atmospheric and enchanting.
