Pretty little Liechtenstein is one of the smallest (not the smallest) countries in Europe, hidden in the Alps. Liechtenstein is not only environmentally easily compared to its bigger brother Switzerland, but also monetarily. A lot of banks, the Franc as the official currency (you can pay with Euros to) and it has a high price range compared to the rest of Europe (or the world for that matter). What is lacks in size, it makes up in nature wonder. It truly is a beautiful country that can easily keep you entertained for a long weekend up to a week (depending on the weather conditions). Besides enjoying nature, make sure to read all about the best sights Liechtenstein has to offer in our blog!
Getting into the smallest country of Europe
To get to Liechtenstein you need to drive through either Switzerland or Austria (and sometimes both if you blindly trust the Google Maps fastest route). So don’t get surprised, like certain blog authors, and check if you might need to get a single day vignette for Austria for example (even when driving from Germany). And chances are pretty high you’ll be getting here by car, as there is no international airport in Liechtenstein.
🎟️ You can get vignettes for Austria last minute online as well, even if you already entered Austria that day. Read the full blog [link in bio] to see why this matters!
Wine from Liechtenstein
What to do when Vaduz turns into a Vadouche? With heavy rain it’s great to wine at the Hofkellerei. This is the personal cellar of the prince and you can sample and buy all the wine you like.
🍷 Liechtenstein produces a lot of wine and this is only sold domestically, so make sure to bring a bottle with you!
Disover the Museums of Liechtenstein
Another great activity with bad weather is to visit a museum like the museum for modern art. Even if you don’t understand it, like some authors, it’s already fun to grab a special coffee in the museum cafe (and have the children exhibition entertain the young ones).
👑 A second great tip is the post stamp museum and the adjacent treasury (mind you this is a very short visit though). You’re able to visit them independently.
🛂 Next to the treasury you’ll find the tourist information office. Besides the usual souvenirs you can also get your passport stamped!
Discover the castles of Liechtenstein
🏰 High on a cliff, overlooking the city, lies Vaduz Castle. You can drive up the cliff, park alongside the road and enjoy the epic view. You’re not able to enter though, as it’s still the prince’s official residence!
Gutenberg Castle
In less than half an hour you can drive from the north to the south of Liechtenstein, where you will find Gutenberg Castle in Balzers. Straight from a fantasy novel, this well preserved castle sits atop a single hill with a beautiful mountain view all around. The best thing; it’s open to the public!
Hidden alpine mountain escapes
Triesenberg
It’s a classic alpine mountain village that’s a short drive from Vaduz. However, if it’s bad weather or you’re an enemy of hiking, than there is nothing to do besides viewing the classical wooden houses and the epic vista across the Rhine valley.
⛷️ if you follow the road further down the mountains, you’ll pass authentic bell ringing cows and wooden chalets. All the way up to the only ski resort of Liechtenstein. Beautiful both in winter and summer, it adds a whole different flavour to your Liechtenstein experience than Vaduz.
